Historical
The green iguana comes from the Iguanidae family. It is also descended from agamids and chameleons. It could be described as a giant lizard. Its ancestor is the Prolacerta, an animal that lived more than 250 million years ago. The first fossils of iguanids date from about fifty million years ago, on the side of North America. They are also found in South America, in Brazil in particular.

Iguanas spread to all continents, such as Africa, Europe, and Asia. It is found in the Galapagos Islands and Fiji too. The Green Iguana, located in the vast majority of cases in captivity, is an American species. However, there are more than 300 other species around the world.
