Breed history
The American Curl takes its name from English, which means “curly,” about its particular ears. The cat was discovered by an American couple in 1981. Grace and Joe Ruga came across a bit of a cat in Lakewood, Southern California. The christened Shulamith gave birth to 4 kittens, 2 of which had curved ears. Nancy Kestrel, a family friend, introduced them at a cat show in Palm Springs, where they were a big hit with breeders and the public.
After a few questions posed to feline specialists in the United States, TICA created and especially recognized the American Curl breed in 1985, 4 years after its discovery.
